-PRESS RELEASE- Huey Long Documentary Concludes Principle Photography
Executive Producer Nancy Tankelson has announced the conclusion of principle photography for the feature documentary, “Dancing Around My Words: The Life and Times of Huey Long.” The 104 year old Mr. Long was an original member of the musical group, “The Ink Spots,” and is considered one of the oldest living Jazz musicians alive. Mr. Long who resides in Houston, Texas, has performed with such notables as Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Dizzie Gillespie, Monk, Byrd, Louie & Lill Armstrong, Fats Navarro, "Fatha" Earl Hines, The Ravens and numerous others over his 80+ year career as a performing musician.
The documentary, directed by award-winning producer-director Alan Ames, is scheduled for release in 2009. “We are extremely excited about this project,” Ames said, “It’s not often that one gets the opportunity to chronicle a piece of living history such as Mr. Long and his impact on contemporary 20th Century music.”
The film, which consists of numerous interviews, celebrations and related activities, was shot on location in both Houston, Texas and New Orleans, the birthplace of Jazz. “Huey was honored by the city of New Orleans, ActiveMusic and Global Green US with a special 103rd birthday party at the Republic Night Club, during the historical New Orleans Jazz Heritage Festival in 2007,” Ames said. “The event was filled with numerous autographed celebrity guitars from such notables as Steely Dan, Santana, ZZ Top, Taj Mahal, Bruce Springsteen, Keith Urban, Brad Paisley, Roy Head and numerous other musicians who performed live at the festival. The instruments were auctioned off ,with the funds going towards the New Orleans Musician’s Clinic and the “Green” rebuilding of the famous 9th Ward, home to “Fats” Domino and many other New Orleans musicians.”
The film opens and closes with a narrative carriage ride through the French Quarter where Mr. Long was honored by a special tribute from The Treme Brass Band in the infamous Jackson Square ,one of the most notable locations directly opposite the renown Café Du Monde.
